Finding Government Information on the Internet: A Tutorial

Locating a particular government publication

Do an author, title or subject/keyword search using The Catalog of Government Publications or Marcive WebDocs (VU only) from the Government Databases-Title Listing. These databases will give you a hot link to the publication, if it is available online. If it isn't, they will also provide the Superintendent of Documents (SuDocs) number and other bibliographic information to help you locate the item at the Christopher Center or through Interlibrary Loan. Marcive WebDocs has a 'holdings' option that will tell you if VU, or another area library, has the item. Use the Christopher Center User's Guide, Locating Government Information, to find out how SuDocs numbers work.

Other subject-specific government databases are available for searching, along with the Library of Congress online catalog and the catalogs for the National Libraries. Use the Government Databases-Subject Listing to find all of these resources.

Some of the more common government reference books that are available online may be found in GALILEO, our online library catalog.
